Channel Island mystery

Guernsey has filter-in-turn at some junctions. It also has ruettes tranquilles, where the speed limit is 15mph, and pedestrians, horse-riders and cyclists have priority over vehicles. So it was a surprise to see quite a number of traffic lights in the main town of St Peter Port.

Those lights cause the same needless delay, air pollution, conflicting speeds and needs that plague the mainland. Why isn’t filter-in-turn used across the whole island? A mystery. To introduce it would only take some publicity and Give Way signs painted on road surfaces. It would cleanse the air, eliminate stress and delay, and improve quality of life.

To what extent are manufacturers and salesmen of control systems involved in the deployment of traffic lights, those weapons of mass distraction, danger and delay?
